Video Games, a sport or just the opposite?

The obvious conception we all know about video games is that they don’t share any of the characteristics of sports.  But what if I told you that you were precisely… wrong, it was all a big misconception, wrong, wrong, wrong, video games actually have many things in common with already classified sports, and here’s how.  Even though video games can require lots of skill, strategy, and planning. Video games shouldn’t be considered sports because kids will assume video games are enough to stay fit, with the knowledge that video games are a sport, video games can also be very time consuming, finally video games can make violence feel like reality.

 

To determine whether or not an activity is a sport, it requires a close inspection of the definition. According to the Oxford dictionary, a sport is an activity that requires physical exertion. It is now obvious to see that is that video games require no physical exertion and thats final. But is that the only thing that makes a sport?  There are many other key characteristics that make up any sport. For example, according to the website, “The odyssey”, “Chess is considered a sport and you don’t see any physical exertion in that, do you?”  But, Chess is considered a sport simpy because of its need for skill and strategy.  Nevertheless, video games should be a sport no doubt about it, right?

 

Not quite, there are just a few more factors that play a role in whether or not video games are a sport.  For a start, maybe video games don’t require any physical exertion, but dont they need to benefit your health in some way? For example, playing video games long term canead to the same issues caused by long-term television watching, including headaches, blurred vision, and even nearsightedness if frequent breaks aren’t taken to relax your eyes. So the question now is are video games doing more harm than good.

 

Secondly, video games can be very time consuming. The website titled “The Debate” addresses the outcome of video games consuming so much of people’s time. The article uses expert opinion to discuss whether or not video games are worth the time they require. One key example discussed was, “Are video games too time consuming.” One statement discussed was “If kids put so much time into video games will they have any time for more important things like school, sports, and chores.” This means that kids will have less time for activities that help maintain a healthy lifestyle. Due to such little time this will result in kids replacing sports with video games.

 

Finally, video games can make violence feel like reality.  According to a website titled “HUFFPOST” the outcome of violent video games can cause children to attack each other the main statement was, “ Games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat were causing children to attack one another. What do you think are these characteristics of a sport?

 

Video games are often thought as the game that require endless skill and extreme strategy which should be considered a sport no doubt about it. It could be true, who knows maybe the downside of video games isn’t enough to overcome the reasons video games should be considered sports. Maybe playing video games instead of basketball is worth ruining your eyes.

Despite the beneficial properties from a fun thing to do while youre bored to an activity that strengthens your brain, video games are great and may someday be considered a sport, but they can also dyour health, household, and even schedule.
