These days, kids and technology are inseparable. Especially when it comes to five year olds and YouTube, and teens with Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook, just to name a few. About 94% of teens use social media daily while 71% use different types of social media. Social media is websites and applications that enable users to create or share content or to participate in social networking. Some people love social media and have no problem with there kids using it. Others aren’t a big fan and don’t allow their kids on social media because they might be exposed to stuff they’re not suppose to see or be cyberbullied. This problem is important because even though kids can be cyberbullied, kids should be able to have social media because social media allows kids to boost their social skills, social media lets kids learn, and it allows kids to express themselves however they want. This information will clarify the value of social media and kids.

Initially, parents think that social media is bad for kids, but really it can actually be good for them. Social media boosts kids social skills, which is one of the reasons why it’s good for kids. The website “www.sheknows.com” addresses the importance of kids and social media. The website uses examples to discuss how social media boosts kids social skills. One crucial fact to explain how social media boost kids social skills is when  Dr. Barbara Winters states “ Social media allows teenagers to be a part of a group, which is a cornerstone to self-esteem” which can also lead to confidence to speak and socialize. There is a need to realize that because some kids who might be socially awkward can go onto social media and build social skills. This matters because  Another important idea from the website “www.hdnews.net” illustrates that social media can improve kids social skills by stating “ Adolescents can expand their online connections by communicating with those from diverse backgrounds. These relationships offer adolecentes opportunities to learn tolerance and respect for others”. This is essential information that proves that kids can improve their social skills by social media. There is a need to realize that because now if your kid is socially awkward you can make a social media account and they can then grow their skills on socializing.

Furthermore, social media can support kids and learning. The website “ www.hdnews.net “ introduces the reasons for kids having social media and how it can help them learn. The website cites expert opinion to describe how social media is impacting on kids and learning. One key piece of information to explain how social media is helping kids learn is when the article states “ They can increase their social and political awareness by watching the news, programs on current events or documentaries. Teens can also read about many topics online.”. It is rather obvious that kids can learn from social media by searching up articles to read or by watching the news. In other words, kids can use social media to learn. Another important idea from the website “ www.theconversation.com ”  indicates that kids can use social media as a tool for learning. The author states “ Social media is a platform for sharing ideas, information and points of view. This can have important educational value: it extends the information youn people can access while also giving them insight into how others think about and use that information.” So, kids can use social media to share ideas and information while also looking at other information that other people post. This matters because now even more parents will trust there kids on social media because they know that at least they are doing something good. These ideas reinforce the value of social media and how it can be used as a tool for kids to learn.

Subsequently, social media let’s kids express themselves however they want. The website titled “www.sheknows.com” supports the reasons for kids and social media allowing them to express themselves. The website cites expert opinion to discuss the issue of how social media can benefit kids even though it may not seem like it. One key piece of information to support why social media lets kids express themselves is “ Social media allows teens to express their individuality through stories, pictures, quotes, which can be beneficial to emotional, sexual, and spiritual health”. This means that kids who use social media can express themselves around a much bigger audience and can lead to good health in all sorts of ways. In other words, kids get to do what they want on social media and by expressing themselves and other people who have the same interest can follow or friend with that kid. Another important idea from the website “ www.huffingtonpost.com “ indicates that social media allows kids to express themselves by stating “ Digital technology allows kids to share their work  with a wider audience and even collaborate with far-flung partners. If they are really serious, social media can provide essential feedback for kids to hone their craft.” . This is a very powerful example because it proves that social media is good for kids who express themselves. There is a need to realize that because now parents can be less hesitant of their kids using social media. These pieces of information emphasize the value of kids and social media and how it helps kids express themselves.

Hence, even though kids can be cyberbullied, kids should be able to have social media because social media increases kids social skills, social media allows kids to learn information, and social media also allows kids to express themselves however they want.
